Since I was a little girl growing up in France, I had a dream of living in New York City. When I got a little older, (well ok, much older), I vacationed in the Big Apple a few times and finally found myself living there. I started my first business (a telemarketing company) in 1998 in Paris. I actually quit my job as a sales manager on a Friday evening and started my  business on Monday morning. With no savings, hardly any contacts, no specific entrepreneurial  knowledge, I was terrified!

When I think back, it was really crazy and, in a way, irresponsible.

But anyway, my dream was to have a business that I could run from anywhere in the world, with just a computer, a phone and internet, so at some point I could move my business to New York  and I wasn't about to let that dream die.

I admit, the beginning was not easy. I made a number of mistakes and I didn't plan to have more clients than I could handle. I was so swamped that I no longer had the time to come back to New York, in fact, I didn't have time for anything other than work. I was so busy running my business because I didn't have a system. I ended up hiring a team so I would have more time to do what I wanted and work "on my business" instead of "in my business" as Michael Gerber explains in his book "The E-Myth Revisited". After all, I started this business to have more freedom, not to become the sole employee of a growing business.

Once I had a little freedom to think, I came back to New York City to locate US entrepreneurs who wanted to develop their businesses in France. Finally, I had the opportunity I always wanted. I moved to New York because I believed I could help them set up appointments, make cold calls and organize their trips to France. But I was wrong and it didn’t work as I planned.

That is when I discovered the world of networking.

Networking didn’t exist in France at that time, so the concept of networking was completely new to me. I still remember the very first networking event that I attended. I discovered the event on the Internet and signed-up. I arrived in a crowded bar, very noisy, took my name-tag, and looked around. I was so intimidated that I left in less than two minutes and said “ok, this networking thing is definitely not for me.”

Looking back, it's quite funny that I shunned these events when you consider that I am now one of the most sought after networking experts.

I built up the courage to try a few more networking events. A good system was key; I set goals to speak with four people at the first one, six people at the second one, ten people at the third one and so on. The events were at crowded bars where the noise overtook the conversation and that didn't work for me because my English was still not fluent. It was difficult for me to keep up the speaking pace I was used to because I could barely hear what people were saying or even my own voice.

Since the networking events I had access to didn't work for me, I started my own with smaller, more intimate venues. It was an immediate success because people were able to have conversations without shouting, had time to introduce themselves and didn't feel pressured to meet so many people at once. There was no more 'exchange cards, speak for one minute and move on to the next person.'

With this knowledge and my confidence to run my own events I was ready to start my second business from scratch in New York City. This was my dream after all! For most small business owners networking means going to events and exchanging business cards. But in actuality this is not true.
